This is particularly important on partially worn engines - a colder/thicker oil will give the oil pump a good chance to meet the demand. On a new or partially worn engine, if the oil pressure is maintained, the engine is not overspeed or overheated, there is no reason to fail.

For the track, competition or high performance, an approximate target temperature for oil is about 100°C. Above 100°C, the oil quickly dilutes and thus lowers the pressure.
